Canny Things’ More Readable Privacy Policy
We periodically check this policy to keep it up to date and if there’s some serious change happening, we will certainly let you know about it, and if you don’t agree with any of it, just let us know and we’ll delete all your data on request. However, if you stick around, it kinda means that you agree with it – even without telling us directly. Cool?
Now, even though this is the Internet, and in this world of social media where privacy is disappearing at an alarming rate, we are still bound by certain rules, regulations and laws (specifically the ol’ Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act)). And this is all about how we take care, use and safeguard your information even if you don’t.
Now, obviously we will need to grab some of your personal information in order to interact with you. Some of those we will need to pass on to other people – you know like the local postie or PayPal, otherwise how could we possibly get our amazing products to you?
What we won’t do however, is to pass on that data to anyone that has no business in that transaction – you know like Bob from down the road – even if he would ask us nicely, we would totally refuse. Sorry Bob!
Then again, there is stuff that we do! Mainly keeping your data secure for example – at least as much as we humanly can. Which means our entire website is SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encrypted – if you don’t know what that means, don’t worry too much about it. It’s the current industry standard encryption method used to prevent data from being intercepted in transit.
You see, any and all of this is the stuff that makes the internet go ’round. However, the good news is that you do not have to agree to any of those things. The bad news is that we probably can’t sell you stuff via our site unless you do. I mean you could just call us and place an order over the phone, but then the same privacy rules will apply. Damn!
Now, if the Police knock on our door and they tell us we have to show them your data – we will totally do that (because they have guns!!!) and most likely also some legal paperwork that will tell us that we need to hand over that data. So yeah – so much about your privacy.
We also deal with people located outside of Australia – you know, like PayPal, or our web service provider. Those people may handle some of your data, but they may also be bound by different rules and laws of their respective country. We will make super sure to let them know not to mess with your data – in the end however – what are we gonna do? I mean it’s encrypted and all, but you never know what mischief some people are up to.
Our IT guy is a total geek – so he makes sure there is an official anti-virus and firewall software in place whenever we do our work here. Trust me – he’s pretty serious about that stuff!
We do give you cookies – everyone loves cookies! The ones we use are just small file fragments that will live on your device if you permit it. They do pretty basic stuff, like recognise that you have been here before or added some stuff to your shopping cart. You can choose to not to accept cookies from our site – but to be honest your browsing or shopping experience will truly suck!
We keep track of visitors to our site – and when there’s a huge number of people that look at our site, we all celebrate and might even pop open a bottle of bubbles. That data is anonymous though – so we don’t really have to worry about that.
If you agree, we might send you the odd email about new products, and if we ever get our heads around that whole SMS marketing thing, we will sure not ever do that to you, because it totally stinks to get advertising via SMS text messages. They should be reserved for friends, family and maybe some additional selected few.
There actually is an Australian Spam Act (2003 (Cth)). Ha! I bet you didn’t know that!
We, however didn’t need anyone to tell us to not to send you unsolicited stuff. Seriously – who even does that?! Also, if you ever change your mind and you don’t want to hear from us anymore – just let us know or click that unsubscribe link in our emails and that is that. I mean we will hate to see you go, but sometimes you just have to let travelling people go, and you never know – you might even be back some day…
We keep your stuff for a while – you know… around 36 months. After that, even if we did get along, we will wipe that data. A whole three years without contact is simply too much to bear for us. We might have to retain some sales data for a bit longer though – it’s not that we really want to, but I guess it is what it is.
If you ever entered anything wrong – or we stuffed up, you can just let us know, and we will totally fix that up for you. We might need to get you to verify your identity to make sure it’s not Bob that wants to access your stuff.
You may come across links to other sites here – even social media sites. Now listen up! When you go there, we can’t help you anymore – these guys have their own rules, so you’d better be checking them before you submit any data there.
We will always try really hard to keep the peace and make everyone happy, sometimes however things get out of hand and everyone is all angry and upset. If that happens, please contact us and give us about a week to resolve whatever needs to be resolved, and if we can’t do that, you have every right to contact The Office of Australian Information Commissioner (at www.oaic.gov.au/) to lodge a complaint. (Pretty cool of us to even tell you that huh!? Seriously though.. did you know that was even a thing?)
If you want to get in touch with us – we’ve made this really neat online contact form – which is probably the fastest and easiest way to get anything done. Otherwise the ol’ snail mail is still a thing, but might take a few more days to get to us.
