Lemon Balm is a perennial herbaceous plant in the mint family and native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, Iran, and Central Asia, but is now naturalised elsewhere. It grows to a maximum height of 1 m. The leaves have a mild lemon scent.
Since the Middle Ages, lemon balm has been hailed for its medicinal properties and has been used with the intent to decrease stress, promote sleep, ease anxiety, and relieve the discomfort of cold sores.
It is used in teas, cooking, garnishing and to add a refreshing lemon-like aroma to water.
